About the Collection:
Introducing the "Taku Series," illustrated by Dan Ekdahl. Dan, based in Sea Bright, New Jersey is an artist specializing in Batik and Gyotaku, with a background in Art History. Gyotaku, a 19th-century Japanese art form, combines "gyo" (fish) and "taku" (impression). Originating as a means for Samurai fishermen to settle bets in the absence of photography, Gyotaku involves inking freshly caught fish with sumi ink (derived from a root). Anglers would then cover the fish with washi rice paper to create accurate images. Since the ink was non-toxic, it could be easily washed off, allowing the fish to be consumed or sold. Ekdahl, with over two decades of experience in fish printing, not only practices this traditional art but also shares his expertise by teaching this revered technique. Dan's work are featured at Skratch Kitchen in Bradley Beach, Spring Lake Seafood in Spring Lake, and Autumn Elise Vintage Gallery in Rumson. When Dan is not busy crafting a new Gyotaku masterpiece, you can locate him at 2nd Jetty, a restaurant in Sea Bright, NJ. There, he showcases his artistic skills behind the bar, with his artwork displayed throughout the restaurant.
